The Government received a red card from the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) in September for its efforts in wildlife protection.
A red card was given in those areas where there has been deterioration since 2010 or progress is at a pace unlikely to put improvement on a satisfactory trajectory by the end of the 2015-2020 Parliament. The Biodiversity 2020 indicators provide targets for biodiversity to be achieved by 2020. DEFRA’s first assessment of progress indicators undertaken in 2013 found improvement against 13 measures, deterioration against 13 measures and little or no change in 11. The latest Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) show a deterioration in the counts for three out of four types of bird populations, used as a litmus test for the SDI’s ‘UK wildlife’ indicator. Invasive species, which harm native biodiversity, are also becoming more prevalent.
