The new British Standard for surveying bats in trees and woodland has recently been released. This quantifies survey effort and could mean increased survey costs. Read how JFA can save you money.
BS 8596 surveying for bats in trees and woodland calls for more rigorous survey data collection as many bats associated with trees and woodland are hard to pick up using traditional survey methods. However this may lead many to take an over precautionary and costly approach, especially where individual trees are identified with suitable bat roosting features. Emergent surveys may be recommended, this cost could easily be unnecessary. At JFA our bat licenced ecologist will correctly assess these features before recommending emergent survey before using camera, endoscope and if necessary a climbing ecologist. In this way only the trees with real bat potential will require further survey effort.
