The Impact Risk Zones (IRZs) dataset is a GIS tool which maps zones around each SSSI and specifies the types of development that have the potential to have adverse impacts at any given distance.
England has 4,128 Sites of Special Scientific Interest which are legally protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). Natural England notifies a SSSI when an area of land has features which are of special interest according to scientific guidelines. Each site has a different potential for impact depending on the particular sensitivities that the site has been notified for. The Impact Risk Zones (IRZs) dataset is a GIS tool which maps zones around each SSSI and specifies the types of development that have the potential to have adverse impacts at any given distance. The IRZs dataset tool can therefore be used to quickly determine if a proposed development is unlikely to pose a risk or if it requires more detailed consideration. The tool can be displayed and interrogated quickly through the use of the Multi Agency Geographic Information for the Countryside (MAGIC) website. The tool is also available from Natural England as a dataset for use in GIS software. Natural England have recently amalgamated their website into the gov.uk site. Currently the dataset is still available from a part of the old site but this may be redirected in the future. It is also linked from the new pages that relate to the developers guidance information. construction near protected areas and wildlife protected species and sites how to review planning proposals
