Native birds are beginning to think about building their nests in preparation for the breeding season, typically March to July inclusive. This is why the best time to carry out work to trees and shrubs is winter, this also coincides with the trees dormant period. However this does not mean works cannot be carried out at any other time. For ecological advice call and speak to a member of staff.
Around this time of year our native birds are beginning to think about building their nests in preparation for the breeding season, typically March to July inclusive. Favourite nest building materials include leaves, broken twigs, feathers, moss, straw and soft mud. Some of the more unusual and surprising materials found in nests include spider web silk, dental floss and mop string. Residential, commercial and industrial developments can lend a helping hand to our native love birds by providing readymade nesting opportunities in the form of bird boxes within the design of new developments. This will help with offsetting the loss of natural habitat as birds will often return year upon year to existing nests and with the provision of nest boxes they will be guaranteed a home for life. Like all new developments bird boxes come in a variety of real estate choices suited to all tastes; High-rise nest boxes for owls, penthouse boxes for swifts, open plan living for swallows and terraced nest boxes for blue tits and sparrows. All of which can be easily fitted onto the walls of new developments and integrated into the soft landscaping features within surrounding green space. Some nest boxes can even be built into the design of the buildings themselves forming an integral part of a wall building block for a more inconspicuous design. Here at JFA we like to recommend bird boxes made from long-lasting durable materials.
