JFA’s former involvement in carrying out the ecological impact assessment for a historic mill complex located on the River Test has paid off with the new owner, Bombay Sapphire, attaining a BREEAM outstanding rating.
The first ever such award for a refurbished building and distillery. Valuable work was carried out to open up ecologically Sensitive River, which had been hidden in concrete culverts. Laverstoke Mill is a site steeped in natural beauty, sitting astride the crystal clear River Test and situated within a Conservation Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).The banks of the river were also naturalised with a reeds and flower beds to enhance biodiversity. The former paper mill which was mentioned in the Domesday Book is now home to Bombay Sapphire who allow visitors into the factory. Thomas Heatherwick, creator of the Olympic cauldron, has created two enormous glass bell jars which house tropical and temperate plants symbolic of the early glass houses at Kew and Crystal Palace.
